Shadow Photography
In this project, you are going to be looking at the way light shines on objects and produces shadows. The shadows produce lines, shapes and forms. The challenge is to make the shadows themselves an interesting part of your photo.
Values and contrast are a major part of the photograph. Some lighting is more soft and diffused while other lighting is more harsh and direct. |
Shadow Photography: focus on the shadows created and unique ways of using light and design. This is used in a variety of ways and the photos are typically made black and white.
Direct Light: Lighting provided from a source without reflection from other surfaces. In day lighting, this means that the light has traveled on a straight path from the sky (or the sun) to the point of interest.
Diffused Light: means to soften it by reducing glare and harsh shadows.
Direct Light vs. Diffused Light: Direct light will make for more dramatic lighting and darker shadows. The light shines directly on the object. Diffused lighting will make for softer shadows and less contrast. The light is dispersed more because of a shade or cloud

Step OneBefore you can take photos, you need to make designs and cut out shapes from Styrofoam cups and tag board. You need to be able to create designs that will make interesting shadows/play with the light. Both geometric and organic shapes will work for the designs.

Step TwoOnce the cup and tag board have the cut designs, you are going to use both direct light and diffused light to play with the shadows that will be made. Taking pictures from different angles and changing the lighting will make the pictures visually interesting
|
Step ThreeAfter all your pictures are taken, you will bring them into Photoshop. Cropping, changing to grey scale, and adjusting levels will add the final touches to these photos.
You can also keep them in color but the black and white does add to the dynamic. |
